Chinese Star Anise is a common ingredient in Chinese cuisine and has a sweet flavour that is similar to liquorice. Frequently used to make Chinese Five Spice powder, or Indian Garam Masala, this slightly bittersweet spice also works well with Pepper, Cloves, Fennel, Cinnamon and Ginger.  It makes an excellent complement for fatty meats such as goose, pork and duck, can enhance slow-cooked beef and chicken and works well be poached fruit such as pears and plums.
