Mexican Pimento

The Mexican Pimento is the dried unripe fruit of the Pimento Dioica tree which comes from the family Myrtaceae (myrtle family).  The berry is sometimes also known as Allspice because of the dried seed’s aroma which smells like a combination of spices; most notably Cinnamon, Cloves and Nutmeg.  However, it should not be confused with the allspice blend.  Sold as berries, it can be used whole or crushed or ground.  It compliments stews, casseroles and marinades and it can be added to sweet dishes for increased spiciness.
